... as Oshiohmole pledges all-embracing government
Gabriel Enogholase
Friday 18 April 2008

Action Congress (AC) Governorship candidate, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said yesterday in Benin that he would form an all bracing government once he takes over the reins of power in Edo State.

He told a delegation of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) that paid a courtesy call on him at his campaign office that the problem of Edo State, which he said is lagging 20 years behind others in term of infrastructure development, would require the skills of all citizens of the state both within and outside, irrespective of political affiliation, to solve.

He words: “I want to invite you to appreciate that the business of delivery of the very high expectations of our people, would require that those of us who are in the forefront for the struggle for a change must recognize that it is a call to duty and that duty should not be restricted to party members or faithful.

“It should be open to all men and women of this state even those who live outside this state, those skills that the state needs to drive the kind of fundamental changes that we want to be able to carry out. It goes beyond the membership of a political party.

“Therefore, sir, I invite you to be ready, while we are looking on the appeal and we pray that God who started it should not abandon it because in history of all the manipulation, we got judgment. God that made that possible will make the appeal possible,” he said.

“We can as well begin to get ready; all of us have to work on what I called a government that would be determed to invite the people across the Senatorial districts and across the parties. In all the political parties, there are men and women who are sound and credible. So there is no reason why they should not be given the opportunity to contribute their quotas to the challenges of meeting a very high expectation of our people.”

“My hope is to be a driver, and a motivator, at best first among equals. No one man has all the skills to bring about the kind of changes that our people need in order to resolve our problems. All of us should be ready to be part of those efforts.

“What we mean by our campaign slogan, “Let the People Lead” is that the people must be the driver, they must be the means and end ay whatever we wants to do. They don’t just want good roads; they want to participate in the decision or how to prioritize the roads.

“They want the bottom up approach to governance and development rather than the top down approach because we should not operate from the assumption that as leaders, we know better than those are following”.

Earlier, spokesman for the ANPP, Dr. Ovienseri Aibueku draw the attention of Comrade Oshiomhole to the deluge of problems facing Edo State saying that he should be prepared to tackle the problems headlong in order to meet the high expectation of the people once he takes over government.

“As reasons politicians, we need to draw your attention to the daunting challenges of the state. We must not fail to draw your attention that we have a lot of problems in Edo State as we celebrate your victory at the polls and tribunal”.

“Governing Edo State is not a bed of roses. Very many of us who are celebrating today in another three months when you take over, are going to be asking you a lot of questions”.

He said that the ANPP would cooperate with him to ensure that he surmounts all the challenges facing the state.
