In Edo, we‘ll
confront PDP with a united opposition—
OSHIOMHOLE
(01.26.07)
There
is no controversy. We have an alliance between the Labour Party and the
Action Congress in the gubernatorial election of Edo State because we
see the benefit of a coalition. If everybody goes into factions and you
contest in your small, small platforms that would work to the benefit of
the government in power. This is a manner of common sense around the
world that opposition parties try and shelve their differences and work
together so that they can defeat the government in power with the
so-called power of incumbency. So, that is what we did. There is no
controversy over it. It is straight and it is clear. But of course,
under the rules, if you have to go into an alliance, you have to choose
on which political party platform because you cannot use alliance. The
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) does not recognize
that. The AC people insisted we have to use their platform and not
Labour because they have stronger structures on ground. We agreed that
we use AC structures.

Nigerian banks (03.04.04)
What this meeting has done is to convince the banks that they have to
have the unions to exist in the various banks," Mr Oshiomhole said.

Nigeria
and the right tools (1
(03.04.04 - By Odi Maduneke) "The power sector remains epileptic, water
remains unavailable in most respects." Water and electricity are basic
necessities for the health and prosperity of any modern society in the
21st century. A government which cannot provide these does not deserve
to exist. It should be pointed out that every single government in
Nigeria since independence has failed the people in this way. The
problem is therefore, perhaps, beyond any particular government or any
particular president.

African
labour leaders 'encouraged' by PM (06.18.02-
CBC News) "We are encouraged by the disposition of the Canadian
prime minister," said Adams Oshiomhole, of the Nigerian Labour
Congress. "He seems to appreciate the issues; he has shown some
sympathy."
But a meeting last week in Halifax of the G-8 finance ministers
didn't mention African aid in its final communiqué.
Oshiomhole said there are concerns the leaders could get
sidetracked with discussions on terrorism or African conflict. But
that, he said, would mean they missed the central point.
"It all boils down to the issue of poverty. Poverty has to be
tackled and we believe that the G-8 are in a position to get
Africa out of the trap," he said.
"We want to make the point that as far back as 1945 or
thereabouts, the world recognized in the Declaration of
Philadelphia poverty anywhere is a threat to prosperity
everywhere."
